As announced by the Government, Goods & Service Tax (GST) will be effective from 1 April 2015. To expedite the implementation of GST, the Government provides an opportunity to those who are qualified, to register beginning on 1 June 2014.

A person has to be registered if he/she:

• Makes taxable supplies of goods and services
• In the course or furtherance of business
• In Malaysia
• Whose taxable turnover within a period of 12 months has exceeded RM 500,000 (historical results or by future estimation).

However, if the taxable turnover does not exceed RM 500,000, you have the option to register voluntarily.

Business required to be registered are encourage to register early to facilitate preparation. The easiest way to be registered is through the tax payer access point https://gst.customs.gov.my/TAP
